As part of their three-day community festival, Voices of Lynn presents a film showcase in partnership with the Lynn Auditorium featuring two short films by Koeun Neak and Peter Pa, and a documentary film "The Roots Remain" featuring FONKi, 2017 Beyond Walls Mural Artist.
Doors open at 6pm, film showcase begins at 7pm. Q&A with the filmmakers to follow.
Lynn Filmmaker, Koeun Neak, highlights the story of Brian Pistol, who grew up in Lynn and became a part of Lynn's breaking scene. He joined Bai Cha Breakers in his teens and never stopped breaking from there. Brian tells us the story about his experiences growing up in Lynn as a breakboy and remembers the people and locations in the city that played a role in his journey.
Read more about his experience on the Lynn TV blog.
Prince of the Four Corners tells a coming of age story about a prince who yearns to become a filmmaker instead of his destined role as king. Inspired by Japanese anime, kung fu films, and the silent period of cinema in the early 1900’s, the film uses a mythological lens to view the journey of adolescence towards adulthood.
THE ROOTS REMAIN follows the story of Canadian-raised graffiti artist FONKi, as he returns to his ancestral Cambodia to reunite with his family and to meet with other leaders in Cambodia’s growing hip-hop community. Utilizing Cambodian film archives, as well as new original footage, the film chronicles the heartbreak of FONKi’s family during the genocide and bears witness to FONKi’s efforts to instill passion for street art in Cambodian youth. With his largest mural to date, he pays an emotional and poignant tribute in Phnom Penh to his relatives who disappeared during the war.
